Trama
From the Mahabharata (the great epic of the Bharatas), the largest Sanskrit epic in Indian literature—eighteen books comprising 106,000 couplets—Brooklyn, Jean-Claude Carrière, and Marie-Hélène Estienne created a nine-hour play that premiered at the Avignon Festival in 1985. It was later adapted into a television version lasting nearly six hours and a film version lasting nearly three hours. The play, with a slow, saga-like pace, unfolds with exceptional adventures, violent conflicts, miraculous births, dice rolls, feats of magic, barbaric duels, furious battles, and humorous interludes. The underlying theme is to sever the ties that unite human heroes to the world of the gods, transplant them to earth, and force them to face their responsibilities as individuals and then as citizens.
